How Long does a paving project take?

Each paving project has its own specific requirements and conditions for the job. Factors such as size, complexity, soil conditions, and traffic loads all play a role in determining the appropriate procedures and timelines for paving.  When excavating and installing a new gravel base we let the driveway, parking lot, etc. sit for at least a month before we would come back to pave.  By allowing the driveway to settle for a minimum of a month, you’re giving the underlying soil and gravel base time to adjust and compact further by driving vehicles on it, allowing for some rain reducing the risk of future settlement issues.

How much of a gravel base is required for asphalt?

The thickness of the gravel base required for asphalt paving can vary depending on factors such as the type of soil underneath, the expected traffic load, and local climate conditions.  For example, in our working area we typically deal with sand ground and different types of clay. When we install a base in sand ground, we typically excavate 12-14″ and replace with 3/4″ limestone crusher run. Depending on the type of clay ground we typically go anywhere from 16-24″ and will use a 2″ crusher run for the bottom lift and 3/4″ for the top lift.  By doing this, this helps ensure the quality and longevity of the asphalt pavement.  Having a solid and well-prepared gravel base as we described can significantly ease the process of replacing asphalt when it reaches the end of its lifespan. With a properly constructed base, the removal of old asphalt and installation of new asphalt becomes more straightforward, saving time, money and resources.

How much asphalt do you put down?

The asphalt thickness or depth, depends on several factors, including the intended use of the pavement, expected traffic loads, etc. In general, typical asphalt thicknesses for different applications are as follows:

  1. Residential driveways: For light-duty residential driveways, the asphalt thickness typically ranges from 2 to 3 inches. Our estimates state 3 ¼ inches compacted to 2 ½ inches but are generally closer to 3 inches compacted.
  2. Commercial parking lots: For commercial parking lots or low-traffic areas, the asphalt thickness may range from 3 to 4 inches.
  3. High-traffic areas and roads: For roads, highways, or areas experiencing heavy traffic loads, the asphalt thickness can vary from 4 to 6 inches or more.

What type of asphalt do you use?

-For our residential driveways, we use HL3 asphalt.  HL3 asphalt is commonly used for various road construction projects as the top layer for major highways and roads, where durability and long-term performance are crucial. It provides a smooth and durable riding surface while withstanding the rigors of heavy traffic and adverse weather conditions.

-There are companies that will use an HL3F (fine) asphalt for driveways.  It provides a smoother finish and aesthetic appeal, but does not offer the same level of durability and resistance to dry steering, rutting, cracking as standard HL3 asphalt.  We do not use HL3F asphalt for our driveways.
